From 1908-1940, you could purchase a home from a Sears catalogue. This is simply one of my favorite little quirks of history. Both of these sites are fantastic resources for learning the history of Sears homes and identifying them in your own neighborhood. I have yet to successfully find a Sears home out in the wild, but it's a dream of mine. I was "born in the wrong generation" meaning "why can't I have every single piece of a house shipped to me via railroad and then just fuckin build it with hammers or whatever?". Am average Sears home would be about $30,000 if adjusted for inflation, in case you really wanted your day ruined.
